Change the Channel
The human mind functions much like any machine: as a piece of technology, it will follow the instructions you give it. Most men and women, unaware of the power of suggestion upon their own mind, unfortunately allow a lifetime of contradictions and crippling philosophies to run wild, wrecking havoc on their subconscious and ultimately on the achievements they hope to produce.
Change Your Vocabulary
Men have shaped history with the power of their words. Words have the ability to inspire action or deflate enthusiasm. We have total control over how we describe the world and our experiences to ourselves. The words that we choose to represent our experience can actually affect how we perceive reality.
Choose a Better Interpretation of Events
An example of someone struggling with "seeing the positive" occurred during a training seminar I had conducted with a major power company. I was training a group of middle-managers, and one participant put up her hand. We'll call her Barb.
Everything Has a Silver Lining
During one of my presentations on managing change, a client approached me to discuss his work situation. He shared with me that his company had just given him the bad news that he, along with thousands of colleagues across the country, were going to be laid off in the next few months. This gentleman, whom we'll refer to as Dan, was understandably distraught. He had felt that his middle-management job was secure, and as the breadwinner of the family he felt that his track to an executive role would pay for his kids' university tuition and secure the family future.
Have a Positive Attitude
Have you ever wanted to make a positive change in your life, but weren't sure where to start? I'm here to tell you that if you want to make a measurable, powerful improvement in the quality of your daily life experience, there is a simple and immediate step you must take. By taking this one step, you will improve the connection in your relationships, your enjoyment at work, reduce your frustration in times of challenge, boost your immune system, and create a brighter future! This is quite a roster of promises that I offer, with only a single step to take. However, there is a catch: you may have to change the way you view people, the world, and yourself. If you are willing to do so, the quality of your life experience will transcend your wildest expectations.
How are Emotions Created
! have exciting news for you! You have complete control over your emotional experience. However, I have potentially bad news: You have complete control over your emotional experience. This can be either a liberating thought (if you have a sense of responsibility and a proactive nature) or this can be a debilitating thought (if you like to blame others for your misfortune and lack the maturity to be personally responsible.).
Managing Your Attitude by Asking Positive Questions
The challenge for most people is that they focus their camera on the 1% of the situation that is negative, instead of the 99% of the situation that is wonderful. They see only the difficulties and not the reward.
Perception is Reality
How does perception work? All of your experience of reality is filtered through your perception. Think of perception as the view of the world that you might see through the lens of a camera. It is up to you to point the camera where you see fit. The camera will delete all else from view, focusing only on what you choose. If you choose to point your camera at a sunset, you see beauty. If you choose to point your camera at a car wreck, you see tragedy. The power in perception is that it is completely under your control as to which direction you point the camera.
What is a Positive Attitude
A positive attitude is an intellectual decision to look at a sitation in the best possible light. In looking to the future, a positive attitude acknowledges the reality of the situation but has an expectancy that the best possible outcome can and will occur. In looking at the past, a positive attitude only reviews setbacks and failures as "learning and growth opportunities" and does not needlessly review them masochistically. Some people just like to review bad experiences over and over again in their mind. What's the point of that, aside from learning and improving? Reviewing the video in your mind of a horrible day just makes you feel horrible over and over again!.
What is FUNNY About This Situation
Humour is a tremendously powerful tool, rendering embarrassing situations tolerable and stressful situations less dramatic. It has the effect of reducing our imaginary mountains into their rightful molehills. I've found in life that the people with the ability to laugh at themselves and the situations they face are able to meet life with a joyous sense of discovery, fun and adventure, rather than facing life with apprehension and fear. When we ask the question "What's funny about this situation", our mind searches for the humour in our experience and will more likely to find an answer.
What is Great About This Situation
No matter what the situation is, there is always an opportunity to find a silver lining. Sometimes, the positive aspect of the situation may be very difficult to see right away. In fact, it is extremely useful to ask the question 'What's GREAT about this situation?'.
What is the Value in Having a Positive Attitude
Since many people struggle with having a positive attitude, you must wonder why it isn't a greater priority. I'm definitely not perfect, and I'll admit that I certainly have days where my attitude needs to be adjusted; but I assure you that there is rarely any value in having a negative attitude. You make more money when you have a positive attitude. You have a better marriage with a positive attitude. You strengthen your immune system, fend off illness, attract quality people and relationships and navigate through challenging life situations with grace, ease and power when you have a positive attitude.
Why Am I LUCKY that This is Happening
For some reasons, it seems easier for most people to focus on what isn't working well in their lives. We are so focused on what we don't have, compared to the next guy, but as soon as we get what we want, we complain about why it isn't perfect! If you are taking the bus, all you complain about is that you don't have a car. As soon as you have a car, you notice it doesn't have power windows. When you've got power windows, you notice that you don't have a DVD player for the kids. When you get that, you notice that you don't have voice-activated GPS and Bluetooth for your cellphone! It's absolutely amazing how we complain about what we don't have!.
