Be Wary Of Trainers

It's quite common for people to get motivated about changing their body; invariably they feel that they will be extra-motivated if they go to their gym and hire a personal trainer. And it's true: you definitely benefit having someone push you past where you want to go, and especially if they are experienced and know how to get results.

Burn Fat With Cardio, HIIT IT!

In his fantastic book "Absolution", author and bodybuilder Shawn Phillips highlighted one of his key strategies to staying at under 6% body fat. This strategy is called High-Intensity Interval Training, or HIIT. This is a marked departure from the traditional theory that when doing cardio, you should exercise at a moderate rate in order to burn fat.

Don't Cut Carbs, Just Manage Your Portions

Continuing on the vein of low-carb diets, the existence of these diets is a reaction of the pendulum swinging too far to one side. Since carbs are converted to glucose, they are just a glorified junk food when taken in excessive quantity. They require less effort to eat and they taste great.

Exercise To The Point Of Failure

Failure" is a term used in the gym to describe the point in your set where you cannot lift the weight any more. (A set is a series of repetitions; for example,8, 9 or 10 repetitions of lifting dumb bells would constitute one "set" of dumb bells.) When I say you can't lift it, I don't mean that you are tired, or that it has become "uncomfortable". What I mean is that if your very life depended on it, you absolutely couldn't lift the weight even a single time more. If I were to pay you one million dollars, you still could not lift the weight even one more time. This level of absolute exhaustion is called "failure" and is critical to muscle growth.

Exercise Your Muscles, Not Your Ego

My good friend Kevin Kooger says "Exercise your muscles, not your ego". He usually says this right after I've had sloppy form on one of my exercises! What he means by this statement is that as a team, my friends and I who work out together are very focused on our numbers. So focused, in fact, that the goal becomes "improve your numbers" and silently to ourselves, we say "… at any cost".

Fuel Your Body Immediately

It is imperative that right after you work out, you provide your body the raw materials necessary for repairing and rebuilding damaged muscle tissue. That raw material is protein. Since your body is in a resource-depleted state when you finish working out, you've got nothing left in your stomach to aid in post-workout repair and adaptation.

Get Over Your Excuses

The number-one verbal reason that people offer me as to why they have not mastered their physical body is "I don't have TIME". This is utter rubbish. Everyone alive has time for something; you're just giving your time to something else. Not to put the point too plainly, if you own a television and have seen it for a minute this week, you have time.

Have a Free Meal

I advocate a weekly meal called a "free" meal. This is a meal where you can eat anything you want! You can eat pizza, potato chips, ice cream, beer… whatever your heart desires. What is the point of this?.

Have A Jogging Buddy

Human nature consistently shows that willpower fades and internal motivation fluctuates based upon our energy level, emotional state, physical comfort level, etc. Don't count on willpower to get you in the gym; count on your team. It is a really good idea work out with a friend.

Improve Your Numbers

When I was 15 I got my first set of weights. I got Arnold Schwarzenegger's manual on working out, wrote out his program on a piece of paper, and started exercising. His program was fantastic! Some of these exercises I'd never been exposed to, and I saw immediate and massive results. The problem was that I had a book coaching me, just as this book is coaching you now. A book cannot be your coach; it can only be your starting point.

Make Exercise a Priority

Once you've identified the mental barrier that has been holding you back, and you've decided that you aren't going to be held hostage by that mental barrier any more, now it's time to take action. The only way I can guarantee that you're going to exercise is if you take action and make exercise a priority.

Make The Decision To Change

Your destiny is shaped in the moments of decision. When you decide to shape your body into the ideal level of strength, energy, muscle mass and body fat percentage, you will take action. Action is the residual proof left behind in the passing wake of a decision. You must choose energy over fatigue.

Muscles Grow When You Rest

As Bill Phillips says, muscles don't grow while you exercise, they grow when you rest. Exercising breaks your muscles down; resting and sleeping gives them a chance to repair, adapt and rebuild so that they are stronger and better than before. Because of this, you must give your muscles a chance to rest. Once you've worked out, wait 48 hours before exercising the same muscles again. For example, if you exercise your biceps on Monday, wait until Wednesday to exercise your biceps again.

My Secret Weapon, Tom Kiatipis

On August 11th, 2004, I made the decision to transform my physique forever. You see, up to that point I had never weighed more than 130lbs. I stand 5'8" tall, and I've always had a slight build. In high school I was the kid who was small enough to push into a locker without fear of reproach. A strong gust of wind would have knocked me down! I felt that being so thin sapped power from my spirit since my physique was so clearly lacking in power. I wanted to change that.

Take Action NOW

Don't wait for things to be perfect before you start your journey, because things will NEVER be perfect. There will NEVER be a day that you don't have something else that is distracting you. Nobody who becomes a champion in anything did it when things were easy and the journey was uneventful. You can't plan a road trip and wait for all of the lights to turn green, and all of the construction to stop, and all of the potholes to be mended. Life doesn't work that way. You have to do the best with what you've got.

The Myth Of Low-Carb Diets

In the last few years, we've heard a lot of negative press about carbs. Many low-carb diets have sprung up and claimed success in helping people achieve their diet and weight-loss goals. The reason that these diets are so popular is that they WORK: people lose weight. However, what people don't realize is the long-term problem they are creating, and what the
diet is actually doing to your body.

Track Your Numbers

Most of the time, I work out in the personal home gym of my fitness trainer and best friend, Tom Kiatipis. Tom has invested in all of the advanced equipment found at any public gym in order to shape his body into a trophy-winning machine, so we've got everything we need to stay fit and bring home medals when we compete.

Use a Strategic Rep Range
